Folks, I can't hold this back any longer. About 6 years ago I had never even held a trumpet in my hands, nor studied music. I thought "4 flats" meant you were driving an impromptu low rider! Anyway...I got into this community band thing and am sorta learning to play trumpet.
Well, last fall we had a bit of music written and arranged and dedicated to our community band....by the guy who did "Hockey Night in Canada"! The commission was underwritten by the owner of a huge ranch just south of here (about 20 miles from where I live) and he also like the results so much that he's underwritten the recording of a CD with us playing it!
For a listen to the music, go to mcintyreranch.com/images/home.html . Then click on "Merchandise" and select "McIntyre Ranch Country Score" from the dropdown. The resulting window contains a flash player that lets you "Listen to McIntyre Ranch Country" as recorded by the Lethbridge Community Band Society (http://www.lcbs.ca).
To say that this is a thrill for this here amatoor is an understatement! My daughter is playing lead horn and I'm "back there" in the trumpets somewhere.
While you're listening, you might like to browse some of the photos of the ranch, the countryside and wildlife around here. Why did the ranch owner (Ralph Thrall) do this? Maybe because his daughter is a mezzo-soprano in Montreal and she's on the CD too? Maybe because he "felt like it"? (the guy really is neat...saw a photo of him as a kid holding a cornet in a circa 1930 school band at the museum).
Anyway the CD release party is this Friday evening and I'm really looking forward to it: might even buy a half dozen CDs for Christmas presents (the relatives are going to hate me! hehe )
I know you guys who are pro or semipro or who have taken music to a college or post-graduate degree may think this is small potatoes...but I'll tell you it's a heck of a thrill for someone who never even DREAMED that he'd be doing this one day!
