Why is it that Mr. Monette has gone back to the light weight horns after years of making bigger and bigger trumpets. Did he decide the horns just couldn't get any bigger? Were they not selling? Why back to the lighter models? I really am curious about this.

That is a good question. I am a strong believer in the old saying that actions speak louder than words. In this case my opinion is his marketing needed to reflect the demand for lighter instruments.
Monette has wanted to make these lighter horns for years, but waited for the right time to bring them out. The wait was a good idea since his designs have evolved tremendously since the old Chicago days.

i agree.
wynton doesn't play his rajah anymore.
terence is the only one i know of who actually plays a rajah and he does not sound thick, dark or anything like that to me.
i used to be a monette nut, but then i read something that david bilger wrote where he said trumpets should sound like trumpets, i.e. bright, and cornets hound sound like cornets.
that worked for me.

well dave has created a line of thought that just doesnt work for many orchestral players. an ochestral player needs more color choices than the monette line might have provided pre current line up of light monette days i.e. a 12 pound horn will not work for everything. I think this sums up the thinking that most legit players i know have on the subject. and might give a clue as to why he is goign back to light horns. and anyway when all the horns you make cost 10,000+ you will force your self out of the market. becasue in a world were the top people in the trumept world make 100,000 a year and most make FAR less how many people can really afford his horns?
if you want a rotary sound, buy a rotary and save 4, 000 bucks... you dont have to have dave's holy water on a horn for it to play in tune....

Why not play cornet?
I get a sound VERY similar (don't tell Sheldon) my old Monettes with my Olds Opera cornet.
Eeek gads,

So do you think Mr. Monette has gone as big as he is ever going to go with his horns. At some point it seems like the law of diminishing returns comes into play. Do you think there will ever be as big a horn as the raja and do you think that that horn actually serves a purpose or was it just the last stop on the "lets see how big I can make one of these things train"?

Yes I think he has gone about as heavy as he will go, but you never know. Now it's refinement time. The latest design, the Prana line of trumpets and mouthpieces is a sign of this kind of thing. I think that this move is just a matter of dollars and sense (notice my spelling here). Develop new models, gain attention, increase sales, etc. I’ve seen this in almost all trumpet makers.
High priced car manufacturers offer less expensive models in hopes of more sales by carrying the name of that particular high priced manufacturer. Can you imagine a Monette horn costing less than $1,000?!
Also, many horn makers even try to clone other horns.
If Monette were to clone a horn, which one would you think he would choose?
