Q: Cold sores and Kanker sores in the mouth. What are the causes and cures for them?
A: Usualy viral or dietery defficiency of vitamins. There is nothing to do about it exept chew kalgaron or rafatricin (same drug, different manufacturer). It has an analgetic effect, it doesn't cure the sores.

Liad- Very interesting topic. I suffer from occassional canker sores...the key is to not get caner sores confused with cold sores. Cold sores are on the outside of the mouth, while canker sores are on the inside. Cold sores can be contagious and are related to the Herpes virus, while canker sores are not contagious and are not realated to herpes. A variety of things can cause canker sores, but there is no real cure. Try watching diet...i.e. citrus foods or drinks, chocolates, nuts...etc... THey can be very painful at times, but usually go away within a couple of weeks. As Liad said, there is no cure, but there are over the counter medications (both topical creams and mouthwash) that can alleviate pain and increase the healing time. Hope this helps.

A friend used to take some chewable vitamin like pill - I think it was Cank-Aid or Cank-Away or something - it worked for him. He stopped getting them.

Another thing I have learned over many years of playing and teaching:
Never let anyone else play on your mouthpiece without sterilizing it first, and never play on anyone elses mouthpiece without doing the same. If you are in a music store trying mouthpieces, bring along some alcohol wipes, in case the store does not have any disenfectant (sp).

That's right Mike, keep everything clean. In fact, while working in a hospital, I learned that the hands are the biggest reasons or rather the most guilty “instruments” for spreading diseases.
I have seen musicians in the bathroom not washing their hands afterwards, then standing in front of the mirror with dirty hands, stroking their hair, scratching their butt, whipping their nose, pick up their car keys from falling on the public bathroom floor, then shaking hands with many people outside, take out their mouthpiece and wipe the inside with their finger, wipe their lips with their hands and start playing their horn. Hey, they then go get something to eat (finger food) and continue to shake hands, scratch butt, pick nose and then when the food is finished, lick the fingers. Cold sores, cancer sores … hey why not hepatitis or some other associated disease?!
There have been many trumpets players that have I seen wipe their mouth with their hands while playing. Pops used a clean white handkerchief.
Trumpet case mouthpiece holder … yuck!! Anyone ever clean those areas? I use washable mouthpiece bags.
Just remember that the minute you touch something, whatever is on that something is now on your hands. Keep them clean always.
