How does one go about developing ultra fast vibrato like some of the older cats played with. Like Mendez, James, Clarke, etc......

I always learn things of that nature the best using the "monkey see monkey do" philosophy. Forget the technical part, just sound like what they sound like. -J

My guess would be that those older guys used a "head vibrato" to get that fast vibrato. It's typically a "trailing end" type of vibrato. I used a head vibrato when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's. I was able to get a pretty good copy of Harry's sound using this approach. You can probably get a fst vibrato with the hand as well, although I've never used this approach. I switched to a lip vibrato in HS/College as I thought I could achieve a more contemporary sound. It's tough to get a very fast vibrato with the lip however. Unless you're trying to do a tribute to those guys, that fast vibrato is dated and I can't think of anyone who uses it today.
