Hi all:
Let me say I don't know of a way to achieve this.
However, I think there were too many wars started back on TH by what I call 'kids' (high schoolers or perhaps college freshman with more time than maturity). I'm not saying that all the 'kids' caused problems, but there were a few that made things miserable for a while.
Many people tolerated a lot of crap before some 'kids' got bored and moved on. I would like to avoid repeats of this, but I'm not sure how.
Suggestions anyone?
Greg

Maybe a "Jerry Springer Forum" will need to be created to hold wars between morons, idiots, and flamers. Moderators could move the threads there when appropriate. Those who find that stuff entertaining could go there....the rest of us could avoid it.

Charlie, How about calling it "Taking a Timeout", like they do a daycare? If kids want to get rowdy they move the thread to "Taking a Timeout".

And they can even practice "playpen politics" in there! On a serious note (Eb), how about an interactive calendar? That way, when something serious is coming up like ITG, a hornfest, a particularly delicious concert, it can be posted to the calendar? I suppose this one would need a moderator (just how much consumer interest IS there in someone's H.S. marching band schedule?) but maybe someone(s) would be happy to volunteer to "take requests" and post the items as deemed appropriate.

i think allowing kids to use the site will be fine as long as they dont do like they do on TH and post answers on topics that they have no clue about.

This sounds like a good idea. I notice I have a calendar function. Can regular members see that alos when logged in. I will look into this And they can even practice "playpen politics" in there! You bet. It's there for all to see! (Gee... and we don't even have to wait for a magazine to come in the mail?)

On getting back to the thread subject, kids will be kids and those who refuse to grow up will show the same in their messages all of which will be moved to the Steel Cage wherein they will meet their match in humiliation. Conscience: Liad, in the future would you please write shorter simpler sentences? Liad Bar-EL

Liad, TM,
In theory, I like the idea of the Steel Cage match - speak what's on your mind and move on. One concern I have is that people will copy nasty comments from the Steel Cage and post them somewhere else.

What do you suggest Greg. I have it set up now so only registered users can see into the Steel Cage. For the rest of the forum anyone can be a guest but you have to be a member to post. TM,
I don't think you could devise a scheme that would prevent a registered user from doing a 'cut and paste' job. However, you could make it very clear in the steel cage that if a user does do a 'cut and paste' their account could be terminated. I really hope to avoid the situations we saw on TH where feuds went on for months because one user took another user's words out of context to make them look bad.

IMO, no matter what will be planned, there will always be someone who will endeavor to work around it and even use it to the determent of others. We may just have to let this one issue ride, put the person in question on hold until we as a group decide what to do with him/her. In other words, deal with this problem on an individual basis. We have Steel Cage. Next in line for forum control should be what – Temporary Suspension and then Permanent Suspension?
In my studies of behavior, there is a method called “Behavior Modification” of which basically emphasizes giving attention to someone with good behavior and ignoring those with unacceptable behavior.
How could this work in a forum environment? The person whose posts are not acceptable to this forum could be “frozen” or “locked” from all others to respond to him/her so that in effect, that/those particular message(s) will be “ignored”. To those who want to perpetuate the same message through copy and outside of the Steel Cage will fall into the same administrative action. There is one place (Steel Cage) to deal with this problem and no other place outside of it.

I'm pretty new to both TH & TM, so I haven't seen alot of what's being alluded to here, but I really don't have time for juvenile cra...... er, stuff. I would not take the time to respond or follow the thread. If something like Liad's idea (freezing) could be setup I'm all in favor. When I want to engage in kid stuff, I've got three grandkids who can give me all I can take.

As Art Linkletter used to say, "Kids say the darndest things." I love kids, and I think that "out of the mouths of babes" come some remarkable pearls of wisdom. If we try to keep the youth away aren't we being rather closed minded and limiting ourselves? Wouldn't we be depriving ourselves of viewpoints that we otherwise couldn't see? Picasso was quoted as saying that he spent his whole life trying to learn to draw like a child. Let's encourage the kids here I say.
