Great post Romey... Lots of Fun. Just so everyone knows that Phil Smith would have been the X factor had he taken the audition. I think Romeys post includes everyone in the Finals. Smith did not audition.

Yeah, sorry guy, but I'm afraid that Rommel may be a better player than Phil.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure that even if he did audition, we could safely say that Rommel is the better choice. Yeah, sorry guy, but I'm afraid that Rommel may be a better player than Phil. njp and jettoneman, Careful now - there is no question that John Rommel is a fine player, but statements like this are silly - I do understand why you make them, however romey

Guy, obviously you don't understand why we make comments like that if you say it is absolutely ridiculous. I've heard them both play and I like many of Rommel's musical decisions/interpetations better than Phil's. I'm not alone.

(Previous post edited "ridiculous" replaced with "silly.")
Guy, you're right everyone is entitled to their opinion.
In my opinion Herseth and Smith are in a league of their own and believe it or not there are many things I prefer about Phil's playing.
I grew up hearing the NY Phil live and heard most of the big pieces - Alpine, Mahler 5, 3, 6 Rite of Spring, etc.
I guess it's mute point, since Phil didn't take the audition - I guess he's happy being principal trumpet in the New York Phil - IMO a bigger job than Chicago - and who knows how long until he retires?
Kudos to Rommel for giving it another shot - I'm sure he will get another shot when they don't pick anybody AGAIN.

P.S. I hear Rommel good teacher.

If it's a "mute" point then I suggest the Jor-al. ;D

MOOT, MAN
MOOT!!
By the way, why would Phil Smith want to walk into the rat's nest in the CSO brass section right now?
Just my .02, but I think the New York Phil is sounding better than the CSO these days, anyways.........
Face it, there will never be anotehr Bud, and the sooner the CSO realizes that, the better off they will be.

WORD Mikey. They won't find what they're looking for because it isn't out there. You're right about the brass section too, I sure wouldn't want to sit next to two guys that wanted my job.

i would say that there are "other buds" out there......but they have THEIR style and THEIR orchestras such is the case with phil smith....
phil smith is equal to bud herseth , if he went after the CSO job that would be a step down for him in the artistic sense.
to some people the CSO job would be heaven, but to many it would be hell...
