About a year ago I got the chance to here the Bamberg SO play Mahler 5---the first time I had ever heard it at all. I was completely blown away. Anyone have any suggestions on which recording I should get?? I was thinking CSO or New York... How about Berlin?
Another thing....
About 4 years ago, one of my orchestral-cat-type friends had me listen to a Shotakovich (sp?) symphony with a really great militaryish style trumpet solo in it. To tell you the truth, I wasn't in a normal state of mind while listening to this (better living through chemicals was my mind-set at the time), but I think he said it was either 9 or 11. Please someone, HELP ME OUT!!!

Check out the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's DVD of Mahler Symphony No. 5. It is outstanding, and has plenty of the "Herseth Cam"!! Look for it on www.amazon.com
