On Phil Smith's Excerpts CD, he used a Getzen C Cornet, with a Wick 2B Cornet mouthpiece with a Bach 1C rim.
Sounded great to me......
Phil explains that in his opinion, the Shepherd's Crook Cornet came the closest to sounding like the old Posthorn, but with better intonation.
To quote Phil from the CD, "The Cornet was created by adding valves to a Posthorn".
unquote..
Here in Minneapolis, I heard Manny Laureano do it with a rotary valved D trumpet.
Bud told me he used an Eb Cornet and a very deep mouthpiece.
It seems like people gravitate to more conical bore horns

Phil used Eb the last time the Philharmonic played it (Feb. 2002). I was lucky enough to hear it 2 nights, and spoke with him afterwards.
He said "Adaptability is the name of the game." I other words, sometimes things that "used to work for him" don't work as well anymore.
he's a "class act"

Did he use an Eb trumpet or Cornet?
