What do you cats do to introduce the wonderful world of improv to your younger students. I am talking Jr. High School here. What got you started improvising when you were young?
How do you get them started?

Hmm... I've always played mainly by ear, and I learned improv before I learned scales or even proper trumpet technique... so yeah. I'm not a teacher, just a high school student myself, but what I notice from observing the young bands at my school is that when improv is taught with the blues scale, kids never tend to let that crutch go even when they're improvising over something other than a blues. Get them reading changes, give them a general idea of what they mean, then start them off on roots, then add thirds, fifths, sevenths, and eventually the whole scale. Then add the blues scale and the bebop scale or whatever just as extra tricks to use. Make sure they know that improvising isn't simply playing all the chord tones on the right beat, but actually making up melodies, making a statement, saying something with their own voice as a musician.
Hope that was of some help...
