Allright NYC is the place to be. As a Jazz musician how hard is it to make a living. Cost of living? Playing oppurtunities? Teaching? Gigging? Practice space?
For those of you who live there or who have been there is it possible to survive?

Sure, if you:
A) Marry rich B) Teach C) Get a day job D) Play music you hate E) Take a vow of poverty (and probably chastity)

This is what I thought... Any advice on day jobs that work for musicians in the big city. Are there practice friendly apartments anywhere there.

I live in NJ but work in the city. Making it soly as a jazz player seems like it would be tough over here. I know guys do it but they also are able to do many other things. My advice would be to be as versitile as possible so that you have a chance to make money in addition to playing the music that you want to play. i.e. jazz, improv, your music, etc...

jazzman54: been there, done that, if you don't want to hear the answer then don't ask the question. how many NY based cats actually live in NYC?, not many. my new neighbor is a trumpet player who just came off the road with some well known singer and he couldn't find a place in the city so he's in philly next to me. he's a hell of a lot better player than i am, how good are you?

Jamesfrmphilly, was that question for me Not quite sure. tons of good players live in the city without marrying rich and getting day jobs. Its not easy though. Most of the people that I work with that work but do not live in the city have a family and kids. That is why they choose to live outside and commute. Not because they could not "Make It" I have neither a wife nor kids. I live here for other reasons. see ya, jd
