Ok.. I'm not joking here. I promise. ;D I want to know what kind of cup mute more classically minded players use. I have a Bach black plastic one and a Jo-Ral Triple play. What about straight mutes? I have a Tom Crown copper bottum. Would that be scoffed at in an orchestral setting? thanks, your friend

I use a Wick adjustable cup mute for most sectional playing. I've got an all copper Ulven that sounds great but is really heavy (weighs almost as much as a Jo-Ral copper bubble). I like to use that for solo passages, but I've also got the tried and true red & white (HB) in case that 's what everyone else is using.
I also use the Tom Crown copper bottom straight for almost everything, but the Wick aluminum straight is also a very nice mute. Lots of people still use the Vachianno (sp?) but I gave mine away. Too stuffy down low.
Mutes are cheap, you can never have enough variety.

Humes and Berg has the best sound. You will probably have to sand down the corks however.
I also like to use the Wick

I have a pretty large mute bag. I've found that the correct mute to use in a section is the one everyone else is using. You want to blend, not stand out. For solos, use what you want. I have, let's see, 7 straight mutes, 4 cups, 3 Harmon-types, a bucket (modified), a Clear-Tone, 2 plungers and something I made out of an air-freshener. There are a bunch more in a box in the attic. All the straight mutes sound different. So do the cups, etc. My choice depends my section mates, the conductor and the music. You have to have the right tools available.

Hands down the Humes and Berg has the best "cup sound" Probably is the cheapest too. I cant figure out why people love the wick so much. It is a good mute but doesn't have that great covered sound that the humes and berg has.
