Hiya!
Comebackers + LOW notes
Many of my new pupils have this problem....
Low loud fat notes.......a common problem..
....basically when you hear a REALLY good player playing big-fat-low-loud notes, this is THEIR super-lip vibrancy from practicing over a long period of time with a close lip setting / firm corners even in the lower register.
They ALLOW their low notes to 'roll out of the bell.' [Jacoby]
Lots of less able players, in their effort to get the same sound, achieve it by utilising the simple bad habit of stretching back their lips a little, out of the mpc upon their initial breath, which in effect immediately creates a bigger aperture / bigger sound...and...unfortunately, this works.
If they then wish to ascend the register out of this postion they can't do so easily because the centre point of lip control has been opened up too much. They then apply more mpc pressure to close up the aperture to ascend which of course very quickly leads to tired / mashed chops.
Go on…play a second line g….good…now play a low g…see!…you opened up. There's no need, if you practice as you descend the scale keeping the SAME lip feel for both ends of the G major scale.
Answer...
Be patient with your lower register / lip vibrancy. Don't be tempted by the above! --what?...your doing that already?...well...that's why you find it hard in going from a low note to a high note. Have'nt you ever wondered why Mr.Vizzutti [use his low etudes] can leap all over the horn?.....c'mon....do some thinking! : )
