Ok TopGun and Eclipse. What do you think about deep freezing trumpets. Should I pay someone over $100 to Hans Solo or Ted Williams my Bb. I have heard this process spreads out the molecules of the brass and "ages" the instrument. So if I have a new horn and freeze it maybe it will play like a 100 year old horn? What can you guys tell me about this. Is it a hoax? Does it really do anything? Thoughts? TM

I had my P5-4 done by Tenabe, and I did notice the difference. Warmer, richer sound, more core, less "stiffness" from low to high. mikey

Has anyone looked into what it does to the matrix of the metal, it's affect on durability, longevity, brittleness, etc. of the horn?

Well........I'm neither Topgun or Eclipse.........but I had a "C" trumpet cryo'd a few years ago. Here's what I posted on another site:
"This particular modification/treatment seems to have a lot of advocates. I had this done to a C trumpet a few years ago and the major thing I noticed after it was done was the lightness in my wallet.
Others may have different results."
I'm not criticizing, just didn't see any difference.

Spend the money and get a Valve Alignment.

Perhaps I should clarify.........
I had Wayne do both a valve alignment and Cryo freezing on my P5-4..
So, i don't know if one or both made the difference. All I know is it played 10 times better when I got it back.

Wow......10 times better is a lot. I've had a valve alignment (Reeve's) done on a different horn and it helped (money well spent). For sure I'm not against changing or modifying something if it helps. I mean....I play Laskey Bach's ya know? I don't even want to think about how many mpc's I've got in a drawer somewhere. I've heard great things about Wayne on every forum out there. Maybe I'm not good enough to pick up on subtle differences, but, on that horn for me, I didn't get any value from the process or the money spent. Others swear by it and that's great.

I wonder if any of the makers here on this forum use cryogenics on their horns before they are sold to the public. Does anyone know of a maker that freezes their trumpets after they are built?

Wayne freezes his "Chicago Brassworks" horns as SOP. (Standard Operating Procedure).

Hi All!
This is a tough one to answer as i have never had the benefit of hearing a horn and then hearing it after this process.
But i can tell you that we do not use this process, although we have been appraoached about having it done.
I have met Wayne in Germany earlier this year and having spoken to him he strikes me as a very nice honest guy with true enthusiasm.
I do not personally think that if i had the money to spend that i would be spending it in that area, but i am not by any means knocking the people who do.
The process is meant to de-stress the horn from the stress caused in the manufacturing process.(if your horns happen to have stress to start with of course)
The old idea of " they have done something to it so it must be better" also comes into play a certain amount of the time.
This takes nothing away from what Mikey has said as he may be right that his horn does play better! I couldnt say of course.
Many times Players have come to my factory and said to us " there is something wrong with my horn because it doesnt perform as it usually does"
After a quick inspection finding zero wrong with the horn, we have kindly asked the player to go get a coffee or give us a hour or so to sort the problem out.
The horn is then left in its case untouched by us until the player returns. 99% of the time the player picks up the horn goes out the back to play and comes back in delighted stating that we are amazing!! " what did we do?"
We simply state that we tweeked a bit thats all!
We of course have done nothing than to give the confidence back to the guy who was blaming the horn rather than seeing he was going through a bad patch. They immediately imagine the horn has been put back in great order. IT WORKS
IMPORTANT NOTE
This can work wonders at times!! however it would not be such a wonder if we charged for this, as that is totally under-handed. The fact is we have actually done nothing physically to warrant charging anything, SO WE DO NOT!!
Regards Leigh
