I have a vintage 53' Olds Ambassador that is need of repair. I love this horn and have considered getting it completely overhauled.
Where do you stop with a vintage horn in terms of reconditioning? I've heard some say that relaquering is a no-no but would it really de-value the horn?
Are there shops in the states (or England) that are better at some repairs than others, such as resoldering, refinishing, and removing dents (not just dings)?
Who has the most reasonable prices for the quality of workmanship?
Are there some repair shops that have been suggested on other sites that should be avoided completely?

Interesting question. What does the horn mean to you. Does it have sentimental value. If so it is worth what ever you want to pay. If you don't love this thing you might just be better off leaving it alone. Valve rebuilds, re- plating, serious dent work can be very expensive and in the case of your horn might cost more than the actual value of the instrument. Some shops I have heard of. Wayne Tanabe Chicago Rich Ita Georgia (I think specializes in this kind of thing) Osmun Music (Had something done by them once and was very expensive) Some guy in the LA area. Name escapes me but does some excellent work! Someone please remind me If I think of others I will ad to the list I have a vintage 53' Olds Ambassador that is need of repair. Brass repair work/shops/technicians are no different then any other area you want to talk about. Some are great, some are good and some are to be avoided at all costs. Someone else has already listed a few of the better places, there are plenty more. If you told us where you're located, perhaps you could get a line on a top notch shop near by.

I'm closer to the West Coast than I am the East Coast but I'm really close to a FedEx, UPS or the US Postal Service. In other words, its really not important how far it goes, as long as it's done right.
