Red Sox doc nabbed for drunk driving
by Jessica Heslam
Red Sox team doctor William J. Morgan was busted for drunken driving over the weekend after state police spotted his swerving Mercedes Benz on a Worcester highway and found bottles of red wine in his luxury vehicle.
The 50-year-old Boylston surgeon was ``unsteady on his feet'' and arrested Sunday night after failing four field sobriety tests, said state police spokeswoman Lt. Marian McGovern. She would not say whether he took a Breathalyzer test, but sources said he did.
An unopened bottle of red wine was on the front seat of his car and 10 open and empty bottles of red wine were in the trunk, McGovern said. A near-empty glass that smelled of booze was sitting on the front passenger seat, police said.
``Yeah, I have no comment,'' Morgan said last night. Team officials, citing in part the search for a new manager, declined comment but said they were aware of the situation, said team spokesman Kevin Shea.
Motorists heading east on Interstate 290 called 911 to report Morgan's erratic driving about 8 p.m. State Trooper Stephen Marsh was dispatched to the highway, where he saw the weaving black Benz and ``his speed changing from 50 to 75 miles an hour,'' McGovern said.
Morgan, who police described as cooperative, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, marked lane violation, speeding and drinking alcohol from an open container in a motor vehicle. His car was towed and he was bailed out after someone came and picked him up, police said.
Morgan was arraigned yesterday in Worcester District Court.
One of the leading hand surgeons in the country, Morgan is well liked by the players and operated on Nomar Garciaparra's right wrist in 2001. He is the head of orthopedic surgery at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton.
