My name is Mike Supple, and I will be moderating the Laskey Conversion Forum.
A bit of my background:
I have been using Bach/Laskey conversion horns since 1999. My horns were some of the 1st doen by Scott and Ron after they left Schilke. Before that, I played Monettes for 10 years. (Living and working in Minneapolis, and subbing with the Minnesota Orchestra and studying with Manny Laureano, how could one not be a Monette player .
Unfortunately, I had to sell my Monettes in 1999 after undergoing rotator cuff surgery on my left shoudler, and also getting a tendon in my left elbow resected. (I guess the Monettes were too heavy). After the surgeries, I got back to the horns, and found I could not hold the heavy Monettes without having severe pain. So, I sold them, and had Laskey do his conversions on Bach bb and C trumpets. I know that Monette now has lighter weight horns available; however my financial state does not permit me to own them.
As far as my schooling, Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1985, and a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from the university of Oregon in 1986. My main teachers were Barry Hopper, George Recker, and Manny Laureano.
These days, the scene in Minneapolis is quite slow, which requires me to have a "day gig" outside of music. But, there seems to be enough freelance work here to keep me practicing 1-2 hours a day.
I have also tried Laskey's complete line of trumpet mouthpieces, mostly to get a feel for them. While some are too big for me, and some are too small, lots are just right!
I look forward to both giving and receiving lots of trumpet wisdom on this new forum; a breath of fresh air!
Take care everybody, and remember: It is the duty of every trumpet player to make the violas miserable!
